Providence Self Sufficiency MinistriesProvidence Self Sufficiency Ministries, Inc., a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind., provides educational programs and family services to persons in need. Established in New Albany, Ind., in 1994, Providence Self Sufficiency Ministries (PSSM) collaborates with local agencies and organizations to provide need-based services: adult literacy/GED instruction; tutoring for school-age children; health care services, including a clinic and medication assistance programs; licensed group homes for foster children; family reunification and preservation shelter and case management; independent living classes for youth in foster care; English as a Second Language, music and computer classes; counseling; apartments for people 62 and older with limited incomes, and a senior citizens center. Since 1994, PSSM has provided services for more than 64,600 low-income children, individuals and families. Programs are located at Georgetown, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods/West Terre Haute and Terre Haute, Ind.; Chicago, Ill., and Indio, Calif. Twenty-three Sisters of Providence minister in PSSM programs serving as directors, coordinators, teachers, tutors and volunteers.
